Marine Degradable is a specific certification term that indicates if a package or item will break down in natural marine environments.
Where our compostable materials are certified to break down in land-composting environments, it is NOT marine degradable.
Why?
The primary component that breaks down our compostable materials on land is the microbes inherent in composting conditions. These microbes 'eat' and digest our compostable materials made from land-born plants like corn, beetroot, cassava, and wood pulp.
The microbes in oceans and marine environments have not adapted to eat those types of plants and therefore will not break down our materials. We are still looking into more options for this in the future, especially seaweed derived materials, but they are not yet ready for food-grade applications.
